Since 1938, the NJCAA has functioned as the national governing body for two-year collegiate athletics, coordinating competition and championships for student-athletes across more than 500 member schools in 42 states. It is the second-largest national intercollegiate athletic organization in the United States and operates 25 sports across multiple divisions, overseeing 47 national championship events and nine football bowl games. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the organization shapes the landscape of two-year college sports and related national events. Its work targets two-year colleges and their student-athletes, providing governance, competition structures, and pathways to academic and athletic achievement. In 2026 the NJCAA announced the launch of an accreditation process developed with the U.S. Council for Athletes' Health to improve health, safety, and wellness standards for member-college student-athletes, and it has pursued partnerships to support player development, NIL, and eligibility, including renewals with MMTH and Opendorse.
