Nord Stream AG is a Switzerland-based company formed in 2005 as an international consortium of five major energy companies to plan, build, and operate two natural gas pipelines across the Baltic Sea. The pipelines extend about 1,224 kilometres and are designed to transport gas through the Baltic corridor. The ownership structure includes Gazprom international projects North 1 LLC with a 51 percent stake, Wintershall Dea AG and PEG Infrastruktur AG (E.ON) with 15.5 percent each, and N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie and ENGIE with 9 percent each. Nord Stream AG owns and operates the Nord Stream 1 pipeline system, which the European Union designated in 2006 as a Project of European Interest under TEN-E. The twin pipelines have a combined capacity of about 55 bcm per year, sufficient to meet the energy needs of more than 26 million European households. The company is based in Zug, Switzerland, and employs a relatively small to mid-sized workforce.
