North West Redwater Partnership operates the Sturgeon Refinery in Alberta, a joint venture in the oil and gas sector, owned equally by Canadian Natural Resources Limited and the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission. The refinery is the world’s first bitumen facility designed with carbon capture and storage to produce higher-value fuel products. Construction began in 2013 and the facility has been producing diesel and related products since December 2017, with Phase One designed to process about 79,000 barrels per day of diluted bitumen into ultra-low sulfur diesel, vacuum gas oil, diluent, and natural gas liquids.
