Northern Plains Electric Cooperative is a member-owned electric distribution cooperative in the utilities industry that serves 11,711 customers on 6,721 miles of distribution line in north-central North Dakota, in a 50 to 70 mile wide area from south of Jamestown to the Canadian border. It is one of 16 distribution cooperatives in North Dakota and the largest geographically; it was formed in 1997 from the consolidation of Tri-County Electric Cooperative and Baker Electric Cooperative. Northern Plains is a Touchstone Energy Partner and must undergo a biennial compliance process to document high levels of service and to demonstrate the brand values of integrity, innovation, accountability and commitment to community. It distributes electricity supplied by Basin Electric Power Cooperative and Western Area Power Administration. The cooperative is headquartered at 609 4th Avenue, Cando, North Dakota 58324, is governed by a board of directors elected by members in district elections held annually, and is a member of the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
