NSSRA provides and coordinates year‑round recreation programs and services for children, teens, and adults with disabilities in the northern suburbs of Chicago. It operates as an extension of a regional partnership among ten park districts, two cities, and one village, uniting communities including Deerfield, Glencoe, Glenview, Highland Park, Kenilworth, Lake Bluff, Northbrook, Northfield, Wilmette, and Winnetka, along with Highwood, Lake Forest, and Riverwoods. Founded in 1970, NSSRA was the first Special Recreation Association in the United States. It is based in Highland Park, Illinois, and functions within the Recreational Facilities industry to provide accessible recreational opportunities for residents. Recent activity includes NSSRA's participation in the Shining Stars Awards & Recognition Banquet in Northbrook in April 2026 and the Special Olympics State Tournament in 2025, where NSSRA's Gator Black team competed.
