NWCCU is a small regional accrediting body within higher education that operates as a private nonprofit. It is one of seven national organizations recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit postsecondary institutions in the United States. The commission serves institutions in the Northwest region—Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington—and also extends recognition to select international institutions, including Canada. It is recognized by CHEA and oversees accreditation for 162 institutions, with governance provided by a commission of up to 26 members reflecting public interests and the diversity of Northwest higher education. Based in Redmond, Washington, NWCCU works with higher education institutions seeking accreditation in the Northwest. In 2025, the organization announced leadership changes, appointing Ed Harri as Executive Vice President.
