The initial practice of notarial duties dates back to the ancient Romans.  Most people were not literate in written communication skills; therefore, a trusted public official known as a “Notarius” wrote contracts, wills and other public documents and stored them for safekeeping.

The documents created by the “Notarius” were sealed with wax and impressed with the seal of the “Notarius”.  Centuries later holes were placed in the margins with ribbons woven throughout, then sealed with the wax insignia.
