OAR Northwest is a nonprofit adventure education and research organization founded in 2005 and based in Seattle, Washington. Operating as a 501(c)(3) entity largely run by volunteers, it uses adventure-based rowing to support scientific exploration and STEM-focused education delivered both online and in person, with a focus on making curriculum free of charge. The organization connects communities through ocean, coastal, and inland rowing expeditions, serving students and classrooms worldwide by integrating field experiences with educational content as a laboratory on the water. Its work aims to foster interest and skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by relating those disciplines to learners’ home environments, supported by partnerships with universities and adventure-learning organizations. A notable milestone in its early history includes a Guinness World Record win from New York to England in 2006, and its evolution toward adventure education expeditions continued with programs like the CWF Africa to the Americas Expedition and the ongoing Adventure: Mississippi River initiative.
