Dr. Francisco Contreras, director, president and chairman of the Oasis of Hope Health Group, which has offices in Mexico and California. Dr. Contreras says there is no "silver bullet" cure for cancer but that many patients learn to manage their disease and add years, sometimes decades, to their lives.

Oasis of Hope Health Group is pioneering a new course of treatment called the Contreras metabolic integrative therapy (CMIT). When combined with chemotherapy, CMIT resulted in a 75 percent survival rate after five years for patients with advanced, metastatic breast cancer who came to the hospital for their first course of treatment. That compares to a 20 percent survival rate for patients receiving conventional treatment in the U.S., according to the National Cancer Institute's 2007 statistics.
