Founded in 1904, the Observatories operates research centers in Pasadena, California, and in Chile.  As one of six departments of The Carnegie Institution for Science, The Observatories is a private astronomical research institution that runs Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) in southern Atacama, Chile.
