Based in Toronto, the Ontario Arts Council operates at arm's length from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming as a government agency. It distributes grants and services to professional artists and Ontario-based arts organizations across a wide array of disciplines, supporting areas such as arts education, Indigenous and Francophone arts, community arts, crafts, dance, literature, media arts, music, theatre, touring, and visual arts. A twelve-member volunteer council, appointed by the Government of Ontario for three-year terms, sets the organization's policies and oversees its operations. As a mid-sized public body within government administration, the OAC aims to sustain and develop Ontario's arts sector by providing funding and programs to artists and organizations throughout the province. In 2024, the council partnered with Nordicity Group to launch an action research project exploring the integration of social finance into arts and culture funding and practice.
