Open Data Institute is a non-profit IT services and consulting organization headquartered in London, England. It was founded in 2012 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Sir Nigel Shadbolt to foster an open, trustworthy data ecosystem that serves a wide range of actors, including businesses, governments, research organisations, public bodies, civil society, and philanthropic funders. The institute conducts applied research, consultancy, training, and disseminates free reports, tools, and webinars, while also pursuing commercial work aligned with its mission. Its activities focus on three core areas: improving how organisations build and manage data infrastructure, addressing systemic challenges to make the data ecosystem work more effectively, and generating knowledge about the benefits of open, trustworthy data access to inform policy and practice. The ODI engages with a spectrum of partners across the public and private sectors, and in 2026 announced a collaboration with SAP to launch the IDEA program and develop AI-ready data infrastructure.
