Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland e. V. is a Berlin-based nonprofit in the political organizations sector focused on open knowledge and democratic participation. It develops software, provides infrastructure, and promotes open-source projects to empower civil society and support an informed, fact-based public discourse. The organization emphasizes the democratic potential of digital technologies to help citizens exercise rights and stay informed about government action, while serving as an experimental ground for new approaches. A central aim is to ensure knowledge is freely accessible online and offline, enabling people to share, adapt, and participate in democratic processes. It strengthens digital literacy and ethical use of technology through workshops on data literacy, open data, and open education, and it develops its own educational formats. Over the past seven years, it has built a volunteer-driven community across Germany, supports regional labs in more than 26 cities, and hosts conferences and hackathons that connect policymakers with civil society.
