OpenMRS is an open source electronic medical records system designed for low-resource settings. It is deployed within national public health systems in more than 80 countries, where Ministries of Health and their partners use it to care for millions of patients. The software is free to use and supported by a global community of healthcare professionals, informaticists, and engineers; OpenMRS Inc also announced maintenance releases for the Reference Application 2.12.1 and Platform 2.4.2 in December 2021. It serves national health authorities and partner organizations in resource-constrained settings, enabling data capture and continuity of care while protecting health systems from vendor lock-in. The project has supported thousands of studies across disease areas such as maternal health, HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, and Ebola, highlighting its role in advancing care for vulnerable populations.
