The organization traces its roots to 1955, when it began as the Birmingham Civic Opera, and since then has produced more than 50 operas and brought performers from around the world to the region.

The company formed from a merger with Southern Regional Opera in 1986, operated as Birmingham Opera Theater for its 1987 season, and adopted Opera Birmingham in 1996; it is led by General Director John D.
