Opportunity@Work is a mid-sized nonprofit in the civic and social sector based in Washington, District of Columbia. Its mission is to rewire the labor market so that workers who gain skills through nontraditional routes—referred to as Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs)—can work, learn, and earn to their full potential. The organization pursues this goal by advancing programs and collaborations that increase access to employment and ongoing skill development for STARs. Recent activities include public service campaigns developed with the Ad Council to promote skills-first hiring and to reach organizations that can access overlooked talent, notably Tear the Paper Ceiling and Story Unfold. In 2026, Opportunity@Work partnered with the Brookings Institution on research examining how AI may affect career pathways for workers without college degrees. Earlier milestones include the 2022 acquisition of LaborX and the 2021 beta launch of the Stellarworx platform to improve matching for STARs in selected regions.
