Located in Dunedin, the Otago Museum and its world-class collection has been one of New Zealand's leading cultural institutions since 1868. We inspire and enrich our communities by sharing the natural, cultural and scientific stories of Otago, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the world. From pinned insects to antiquities, Japanese armour to moa eggs – the Otago Museum collection holds more than 1.5 million items from around the world and throughout history. We use these objects to tell our visitors more about the world – from here in Dunedin to deep space, from millions of years ago to envelope-pushing research. We create exhibitions and displays, make objects accessible to researchers for study, and share them with the world through our online collection, our galleries, exhibitions, displays, tours and talks. We also have venue spaces like none other in the city that accommodate groups of any size from tiny to several hundred. Our staff are experts in their areas and can be available to speak to community and proefssional groups and we have extensive outreach and education programmes.
