Based in Accra, the Parliament of Ghana functions as the country’s legislative arm within the government administration. It is a substantial public institution, employing a large workforce to oversee lawmaking and related parliamentary duties. Its historical evolution traces Ghana’s journey from independence in 1957, when the constitution drew on the Westminster model, through a sequence of constitutional changes and shifts in governance. The Parliament has engaged with international partners on development initiatives, including UNICEF, the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), and the Learning Tree Foundation, and in June 2026 hosted the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family Values and Sovereignty in Accra. It has led capacity-building initiatives for economic and financial governance in collaboration with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the World Bank. In 2023, it hosted the 66th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in partnership with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
