The Peabody Essex Museum, based in Salem, Massachusetts, was founded in 1799 and is the oldest continuously operating museum in the United States. It is regarded as among the top 8% of American art museums and has experienced significant growth over the past two decades, expanding its galleries and public spaces and broadening educational and interpretive programs. The institution maintains a collection of more than 1 million works and has advanced projects such as a 40,000-square-foot new wing opened in 2019 and a 110,000-square-foot offsite collection center to care for its holdings. It welcomes about 250,000 visitors each year and employs a substantial staff with a docent corps to support its educational mission. In 2026, PEM announced that its Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo Executive Director and CEO would depart mid-year after more than two decades of leadership.
