Penobscot Community Health Care is a nonprofit health system established in 1997 that operates as the only Federally Qualified Health Center serving the Greater Bangor area, Waldo County, and the Jackman region. Its aim is to provide comprehensive, integrated outpatient care to patients enrolled in MaineCare and Medicare, as well as those with or without insurance, regardless of their ability to pay. The organization is recognized within the community health sector for its leadership and has been named an exemplar practice by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Based in Bangor, Maine, PCHC runs sixteen practices and program sites, including a location in Belfast, delivering a wide range of services—from family medicine and dental care to pediatrics, geriatrics, nursing-home care, psychiatry, mental health and substance-use services, physical therapy, lab work, imaging, pharmacy, and care for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Its four largest clinics operate seven days a week with Walk-In Care Clinics to improve access, and the network also maintains a roster of medical specialists in areas such as allergy, gynecology, orthopedics, podiatry, dermatology, and osteopathic therapy, all under a sliding fee scale through its Affordable Care Program.
