Penumbra is a non-profit theatre company founded in 1976 and based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It centers Black cultural expression to foster racial healing by nurturing Black art, promoting social equity, and nurturing creative resiliency. As Minnesota’s sole Black professional theatre company, it has earned national recognition for a body of work that includes nearly 200 plays and more than 30 premieres, serving about 40,000 patrons and 5,000 students annually. The organization has evolved into the Penumbra Center for Racial Healing, located in Saint Paul’s Rondo neighborhood, expanding its scope with new artistic initiatives, equity and inclusion training, and wellness services.
