Our vision is a clean and healthy Sound, teeming with fish and wildlife, cared for by people who live here. People For Puget Sound was founded in 1991 and in 2009 has grown to approximately 15,000 members, supporters and volunteers across the 12-county Puget Sound region. With offices in Seattle and Olympia, we work with people for a clean and healthy Sound. We educate, we engage, we get results. We are busy educating the public about protecting the health of Puget Sound, advocating for new federal, state and local policies that protect this fragile ecosystem and "getting muddy" to restore precious habitat. We aim to put our region's economy and environment on a sustainable course. We provide a voice for the animals and critters that live in the Sound’s waters and along its shorelines. We partner with a wide range of organizations, agencies and businesses throughout the Sound. Here's a short list of some of the things we've recently accomplished in the campaign to Save Our Sound: * Permanent year-round rescue tug at Neah Bay for oil spill prevention * 1,200 miles of Puget Sound shoreline protected * Low-impact development standards in storm water permits * 300-foot buffer between vessels and orcas * Goal to achieve a healthy Sound by 2020 in state law * 46 miles of shoreline restored, working with 2,000 volunteers * 20 salt marshes, beaches and estuaries restored to health * Biggest ever Environmental Lobby Day with 500+ citizen lobbyists * Thousands of people educated at community events * Toxic free toys legislation * Phase-out of toxic flame retardants * Seattle Styrofoam container ban
