Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale

Based in San Francisco, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale is a performing arts organization that presents historically informed performances of music from the Baroque, Classical, and Early Romantic periods, as well as contemporary works. The ensemble seeks an authentic sound by employing instruments and vocal practices appropriate to the era, aiming to convey the style, spirit, and distinctive character of those works. Its work is shared through live concerts and recorded performances. Educational programs and training initiatives are part of its strategy to reach new audiences and cultivate the next generation of musicians. Three core convictions guide its approach: music is universal and has broad emotional and intellectual impact; historically informed performance offers a unique and contemporary listening experience; and preserving access to authentic historical practices is a legacy for future generations. In June 2025, Peter Whelan was named the organization’s music director.
