The agency oversees the nation’s extensive pipeline network—about 3.3 million miles—and more than 1.2 million daily shipments of hazardous materials by land, sea, and air, with oversight administered by the Office of Pipeline Safety and the Office of Hazardous Materials Safety, supported by five regional offices. It is headquartered in Washington, DC. PHMSA is one of ten USDOT modal operating administrations. It prioritizes a diverse workforce and invests in training, technology, and mentoring to support a dynamic professional environment, while also engaging in cross-agency efforts to enhance safety and environmental protection.
