The Plough Center for Sterile Drug Delivery Systems previously known as the Parenteral Medications Laboratories (PML), was founded over fifty years ago with the objectives of educating individuals in sterile product preparation, developing a platform for research in parenteral medications and provide development and manufacturing services to the pharmaceutical industry, academia and to government agencies such as the Department of Defense (DOD). The Plough Center is the result of a co-operative effort between The University of Tennessee and The Plough Foundation. The plough Center is licensed by the State of Tennessee’s Department of Health. It is 1 of 23 facilities in the entire state of Tennessee that is licensed to manufacture sterile drug products. Also, it is only 1 of 8 facilities in the entire state of Tennessee that is licensed for research. The laboratories contain a core processing unit designed for academic instruction as well as for the processing of sterile dosage forms. Currently, the Plough Center has a capacity of small to medium scale manufacturing of sterile medications. A manufacturing plant for large scale production is presently under construction scheduled for completion in fall 2016. Educational services are offered by a 40 hour lecture and laboratory course which provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental concepts in the preparation of aseptically produced sterile drug products. Lectures by industry experts and hands-on laboratory training by the Plough Center personnel provides the participants with information and experience they can utilize immedi¬ately on the job. Emphasis is placed on preparation, compounding, fill-finish procedures, sterilization processes, sterile products quality testing, and environmental monitoring procedures.
