The Port of Tacoma, based in Tacoma, Washington, functions as a major maritime gateway handling container traffic as well as bulk, breakbulk, project/heavy-lift cargoes, automobiles, and trucks. It is among the largest container ports in North America and serves as a key link to Asia and Alaska. The port acts as an economic engine for South Puget Sound, supporting more than 43,000 family-wage jobs in Pierce County and 113,000 jobs statewide connected to its activities. The Northwest Seaport Alliance is a strategic partnership formed in 2015 between the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma to strengthen the Seattle–Tacoma gateway's competitiveness. In 2026 the Port launched the Northwest Clean Ports website to provide information and track progress on reducing air and climate emissions from seaport operations.
