Based in Washington, D.C., the Poverty & Race Research Action Council (PRRAC) is a civil rights policy organization formed around 1989–1990 to bridge advocates with social scientists researching race and poverty. It promotes a research-based advocacy approach to structural inequality by sponsoring social science research, offering technical assistance, and convening advocates and researchers around priority race and poverty issues. PRRAC draws on a national network of researchers, organizers, attorneys, educators, public health professionals, and housing experts to inform its work. Its public education efforts include the bimonthly Poverty & Race newsletter and the civil rights history curriculum guide Putting the Movement Back Into Civil Rights Teaching, co-published with Teaching for Change. The organization concentrates on housing, education, and health, highlighting the role of place and the continuing effects of historical housing patterns on low-income families. In May 2024, PRRAC partnered with Mobility Works to design a package of assessment tools, training and counseling materials for programs nationwide.
