Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) is India's national transmission utility responsible for high-voltage power transmission. It operates under the Ministry of Power as a Maharatna company and is listed, with the Government of India owning the majority stake. The company was incorporated in 1989 and began functioning in 1991, and it gradually took over transmission assets from NTPC, NHPC, NEEPCO and other central and joint sector organizations during 1992-93. POWERGRID supports generation capacity additions by developing and operating transmission networks for central sector programs, Ultra Mega Power Projects, Independent Power Producers, and related initiatives. To manage its expanding asset base, the company established the National Transmission Asset Management Centre, which operates around the clock to monitor systems and equipment. In February 2026, POWERGRID commissioned the 765 kV Ramgarh-Bhadla III transmission line, reinforcing Rajasthan's renewable-energy evacuation capabilities.
