Located on the banks of the Animas River in an historic coal-fire steam-powered AC generating plant, the Powerhouse Science Center presents a wide range of programs, exhibits, and activities designed to provide an entertaining and inspiring look at science — past, present, and future. The Powerhouse Science Center is Southwest Colorado’s premier hands-on, interactive science center for all ages. Open year-round, the science center is a dynamic place for family adventures, school field trips, early childhood learning, special events, hanging around by the river, messing around with amazing technology, and just plain geeking out. We are also home to the MakerLab, an exciting new branch of the Powerhouse Science Center. It is a community workshop and design studio that provides access to sophisticated, cost-prohibitive, and space-intensive tools and technology, like 3D printers, a laser cutter, and CNC machines. We liken it to the Recreation Center with workout equipment, but with DIY tools for any project you can dream up! MakerLab classes teach the public how to use the tools and machinery, as well as create objects of their own design. We encourage entrepreneurs to develop, refine and realize their ideas and concepts. This is a space to meet other makers, to be excited about making, and develop your skills!
