Prairie State Generating Company operates the Prairie State Energy Campus, a power generation facility located in Marissa, Washington County, Illinois. The campus includes a 1,600-megawatt coal-fired plant alongside an adjacent underground coal mine, and its design integrates substantial emissions-control equipment. It relies on Illinois coal from its own mine, a setup intended to reduce carbon dioxide emissions associated with coal transportation and to deliver energy with a smaller carbon footprint than many U.S. coal plants. The project is 95 percent owned by not-for-profit utilities and rural electric cooperatives. It provides baseload power to more than 2.5 million families across 180 communities from Missouri to West Virginia. In July 2026, Chris Burton was appointed as general manager and joined the Prairie State board.
