PHIN is a UK-based information organisation in the Hospitals and Health Care sector, headquartered at 16-16a Baldwin's Gardens, London, and it employs between 51 and 200 people. Appointed by the Competition and Markets Authority as an independent information organisation following CMA's investigation into private healthcare, PHIN holds a legal mandate to collect and publish performance information for all providers of private treatment and acts as an online source of independent, comparable data; it is not a regulator. The organization aims to enable patients to make informed choices about private healthcare to achieve good outcomes and works with hospitals and consultant representatives to ensure its information is fair, robust, and, where possible, comparable to NHS data. Prior to CMA involvement, PHIN was established and funded voluntarily by its members, with a list of members available on its website. Recent developments include the launch of the Patient Insights Explorer in 2025 to show how private hospital admissions, length of stay, and safety incidents vary by patient characteristics, and in June 2026 the introduction of benchmarking services for hospital and consultant members using PHIN's UK-wide health dataset.
