PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) is an international association focused on standardization and dissemination of industrial networking technologies. It is based in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, and coordinates open standards intended for industrial manufacturing, enabling digitalization and Industry 4.0 across factory automation, process automation, motion control, and safety-related applications. The organization supports a global ecosystem through 23 regional associations, around 1,800 member companies, and more than 10,000 products. PI oversees the full value chain of industrial communication, including tools for automated testing, nine accredited test centers, and product certification. As of 2024, more than 68 million nodes across its standards, 69 million across another, and 50 million across a third have been installed worldwide. In May 2025, PI was recognized for its role in roll-handling solutions for lithium battery manufacturing, where its networking standards connect sensors and actuators in manufacturing systems.
