Project for Empty Space is a small Newark-based nonprofit arts organization focused on creating safe and equitable spaces for social discourse. It seeks to foster conversations about important social issues through contemporary art and intersectional frameworks. The group supports artists whose work centers on social impact and activism, aiming to initiate dialogue around marginality, intersectionality, and cultural shifts. Within the nonprofit arts landscape, PES serves as a platform for socially engaged art and public dialogue in Newark. A notable recent development is a partnership with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center announced on April 22, 2026, to commission 13 artists from New Jersey and New York to create site-specific works for the center's redeveloped campus, with installations planned by 2027 in downtown Newark. The arrangement underscores PES's role in connecting artists with major institutions to broaden public engagement with social issues.
