Proportional Technologies, Inc. (PTI) was founded in 1991 by high energy physicist Dr. Jeffrey L. Lacy, following an early career in high energy astrophysics and medical imaging. Early years of the company were dominated by research projects in cancer and heart disease imaging. Following the 9/11 attacks and in response to the need for screening nuclear terrorist threats, the company developed and introduced to market a patented neutron detection technology, based on small diameter tubes ("straws"), lined with a very thin coating of enriched boron (10B). In recent years, PTI has successfully applied the boron-coated straw (BCS) technology to a wide range of research and commercial fields, addressing the need to replace 3He-based detectors. As a result of the many advantages of straw technology, PTI moved quickly into a position of prominence in this arena. PTI is focused on development of economical large scale manufacturing for a variety of 3He replacement products.
