Qatar Electricity and Water Company is a public shareholding company founded in 1990 in accordance with the provisions of the Commercial Companies Law, for the purpose of acquiring and managing power generation and water desalination stations and sell its products, with a paid up capital of One hundred million shares of QR 10 each. Approximately 43% of the shares of the company are owned by the Government of Qatar and the remaining 57% is held by institutions and private individuals.

The Board of Directors of the company is composed of eleven board members under the chairmanship of HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Emiri Diwan and executive management of the company is headed by Mr. Fahad H. Al-Mohannadi, General Manager of the company.

The company is one among the largest joint stock companies in the region, owns and operates power plants and desalination stations, meets consumption needs of the country and sells its products to the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation on the terms and conditions agreed between the parties by Power and Water Purchase Agreements.

The company has worked to increase its production capacity during the past two decades through the development of expansion projects and new stations. Expansion projects include RAF B1, which added a capacity of 376.5 MW of power, RAF B2 with production capacity of 567 MW of power and 30 MIGD of water, and RAF A1, which added 45 MIGD to QEWC’s water production capacity. QEWC participated in several Power Generation and Water Desalination projects. Ras Laffan Power Company, where QEWC has recently increased its ownership to 80% by purchase of shares of AES Corporation, has a production capacity of 750 MW of power and 45 MIGD of water.
