The Ramapo Catskill Library System is a non-profit, cooperative public library network chartered in 1959 by the New York State Board of Regents. It provides guidance, training and leadership to governing boards and library staff to help member libraries stay responsive and vital to their communities. The system serves 47 chartered public libraries across urban, suburban and rural settings in Orange, Rockland, Sullivan and southern Ulster counties, covering 2,467 square miles and serving a population of roughly 750,000 according to the 2010 census. Its headquarters are in Middletown, New York, and the governing body is an eleven-member, unsalaried board elected for five-year terms, with a non-voting member representing the Directors Association. RCLS operates ANSER, a shared automation network that handles circulation, borrower registration, an online catalog, reserves and interlibrary loan, and provides a fiber-optic wide-area network linking member libraries, as well as data reporting and cataloging services. The libraries cover most of ANSER’s operating costs, and the system participates in regional and national library networks such as SENYLRC, LTA, NYLA and ALA.
