Red Clay Dance Company is an award-winning, Chicago-based Afro-Contemporary dance organization founded by Artistic Director Vershawn Sanders-Ward. As a female-led, for-purpose company, Red Clay Dance integrates art and activism, amplifies African Diaspora voices, supports artists, advocates for equitable pay, and creates accessible excellence in dance. The professional Touring Company of Artivists creates and performs socially conscious, thought-provoking work for audiences in Chicago and worldwide. Red Clay Dance provides a collaborative space for professional and pre-professional dancers, artists, and dance lovers to connect, create, and engage. Through Community Engagement and Education programs, Red Clay Dance delivers accessible dance experiences to schools and communities across Chicago. The organization also leads Making the Artivist®, empowering young people to share their stories, build leadership skills, and drive social change through movement and creative expression. At the Center for Excellence in Woodlawn, the In the Making membership program offers affordable creative space and support for dancers and choreographers, strengthening Chicago’s dance ecosystem. Red Clay Dance presents the La Femme Dance Festival, a biennial event showcasing innovative work by Black women in dance: March 26-28, 2026 with culminating mainstage performances at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance.
