Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, is a Chicago-based hospital and research institution focused on physical medicine and rehabilitation for adults and children with severe, complex conditions such as traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, stroke, amputation, and cancer-related impairment. It is described as the global leader in its field and has held the No. 1 Rehabilitation Hospital in America designation from U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991. Opened in March 2017, the organization established a translational hospital model in which clinicians, scientists, innovators and technologists work in the same space to translate research into real-time care. With a mission to advance human ability, the institution emphasizes an inclusive culture and a cross-disciplinary approach that combines science and clinical care to support recovery. In June 2026, it announced a novel intervention called therapist-exoskeleton-patient interaction (TEPI) in which a therapist and a stroke survivor each wear a lower-limb exoskeleton connected at the hips and knees via spring-damper elements to study real-time interactions.
