The Republic of Korea Army is the largest branch of the South Korean armed forces, serving as the core component of the country's national defense. It numbers roughly half a million personnel and is organized around the ROK Army Headquarters, three Field Army Commands, the Aviation Operations Command, and the Special Warfare Command, comprising 11 corps, 49 divisions, and 19 brigades. In peacetime its mission is to deter war with support from the Navy and Air Force; in wartime it aims to secure ground victory. Core equipment includes 2,360 tanks, 5,180 field artillery pieces, and 2,400 armored vehicles.\n\nThe army maintains distributed artillery units within each field army, corps, and division to provide fire support for maneuver forces, supported by targeting equipment and fire-control systems.
