Responder Wipes® were developed in response to the cancer epidemic plaguing firefighters. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death for firefighters. They are 2.2 times more likely to develop certain cancers, and often they are fighting multiple cancers. Research has shown that most of it is caused by the carcinogens they are being exposed to through soot particulates, both that they inhale and that are absorbed through their skin. The permeability of skin rises 400% with every 5° increase in body temperature; therefore, the carcinogens that are in the soot are being absorbed quickly into their skin, particularly along the jawline, neck, and wrists where the skin is most permeable. It is often 2 hours or more before they are able to get back to the station to fully decontaminate by showering; therefore, utilizing some sort of decontamination system while on scene is critical. Responder Wipes® were developed specifically for this purpose. They are formulated with Micellar Water, an innovative ingredient with cleansing compounds that dissolves soot, oil, dirt and other hydrocarbons. Micelles gently lift away toxins and contaminants, and draw out impurities from the pores, while hydrating skin more effectively than traditional wipes. They are sized to meet the specific needs of firefighters, are packaged in a manner that will preserve the effectiveness of the wipe, and are durable enough to effectively clean the most permeable areas of the firefighters’ skin. Responder Wipes® provide a cost-effective, efficient option for providing on-scene decontamination.
