Production optimization can be defined as a fundamental practice ensuring recovery of developed reserves while maximizing profits. Simplistically, the profitability of a particular oil well is influenced by the characteristics of the well and reservoir such as pressure, well productivity, depth, pipe sizes, and physical properties of the fluids.

Oil properties such as API gravity, cloud point, pour point, paraffin content, asphaltene content, and viscosity affect well profitability. Water properties also impact profitability due to scale, corrosion, and disposal costs. Lastly, gas can be corrosive as well as effect pumping efficiency. When these three types of fluids comingle, emulsions can also be problematic and thus affect production volumes and remediation costs.

Historically, on-going chemical programs have been employed to improve well profitability. However, chemical programs are costly, do not end, and do not always yield the desired results, hence the need for hot oiling, knife cutting, or other costly workover.

Revelant is where production optimization and lattice dynamics of solid materials intersect. In the study of lattice dynamics, atomic motions are frequently found to be described as harmonic travelling waves. Each wave can be characterized in terms of its wavelength, angular frequency, amplitude, and direction of travel. Therefore, it is possible to take advantage of the properties of waves including constructive and deconstructive interference which provides access to the filtering of frequencies from a broadband source. The lattice vibrations of the different Revelant materials guide or control crystal polymorphism in oil and water.

The results are production at a lower cost as paraffin commonly remains soluble, asphaltenes continue to be dispersed, calcium carbonate crystal polymorphs change and/or remain more soluble, and the oil/water interfacial tension is changed affecting emulsions, oil carryover, and tank bottoms.
