The Diocese of Bridgeport is a Catholic ecclesiastical jurisdiction serving southwestern Connecticut, established in 1953 as an offshoot of the Diocese of Hartford and based in Bridgeport. It oversees 82 parishes and operates a network of educational and social service institutions that support both Catholics and the broader community. Its schools include 30 regional elementary schools and five diocesan high schools, collectively educating about 12,000 students.

In addition to education, the diocese sponsors elderly housing and charitable initiatives, including eight Bishop Curtis Homes and facilities like The Cardinal Shehan Center for inner-city children, along with the Thomas Merton House of Hospitality in Bridgeport and the New Covenant House of Hospitality in Stamford. Catholic Charities of Fairfield County operates a countywide network of social services through 25 offices, making it a major private provider in southwestern Connecticut. The diocese serves more than 460,000 registered Catholics in Fairfield County, representing about 51 percent of the county’s population, and is led by Bishop Frank Joseph Caggiano.
