The Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies is San Francisco State University’s marine and estuarine field station. Located on 36 waterfront acres on the Tiburon Peninsula in Marin County, it is the only academic research and teaching facility located on the shores of San Francisco Bay. Our mission is to illuminate the vital connections between, science, society, and the sea. SF State faculty and scientists in 13 independent yet collaborative laboratories conduct research and train the next generation of scientists in a variety of scientific disciplines. Environmental research is conducted in San Francisco Bay and around the world, from Alaska to the Amazon to Antarctica. Graduate students can earn a Master's in Science in Marine Science through SF State's Biology Department in the College of Science & Engineering. Scientists and students are supported by research technicians, administrative and facilities staff, and the Bay Conference Center, which is available for rental to educational and nonprofit groups. An active outreach program shares important discoveries and concepts with students, teachers and the general public. While RTC is not open for regular public visits, our annual Discovery Day Open House invites the community to see and experience our research and facilities in April.
