Ronald McDonald House of Akron provides temporary housing for families with loved ones at Akron Children's Hospital, based in Akron, Ohio. Opened in January 1985, the organization has served the community for more than three decades. The facility offers private rooms with bathrooms, shared dining and kitchen spaces, laundry services at no charge, and a range of common areas; in 2014, 135 volunteers contributed 10,749 hours. In 2014, RMH Akron provided lodging for 12,872 individuals, and had to decline accommodations for more than 5,700 families due to capacity limits. The organization pursued an expansion to add 40 guest rooms, with utility relocation planned for fall 2015 and completion anticipated in fall 2017. Most guests originate from several Ohio counties—Richland, Stark, Tuscarawas, Mahoning, Trumball, Wayne, Ashland, Columbiana, Coshocton and Holmes—with others traveling from around the world to stay near their ill children.
