Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the United Kingdom’s largest specialist cardiothoracic hospital and the country’s main centre for heart and lung transplantation. Based in Cambridge, England, it aims to deliver high-quality heart and lung care through research, education and innovation, with a focus on growth, value and effectiveness and a commitment to the highest levels of clinical quality and personalised care. While it functions as a regional centre for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiothoracic disease, it also provides national-level services, including pulmonary endarterectomy and transcatheter aortic valve implantation, and hosts the largest respiratory support and sleep centre in the UK. Each year, the trust treats thousands of patients from across the UK, with more than 22,800 inpatient and day cases and 53,400 outpatients. Its services span cardiology, respiratory medicine and cardiothoracic surgery and transplantation. In May 2026, a joint venture between the University of Cambridge and Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust established the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart and Lung Research Institute, a facility hosting Europe’s largest concentration of heart and lung medicine scientists and clinicians.
