The Royal School of Needlework is a mid-sized charitable organization with a long history of hand embroidery expertise. It offers an extensive education program, including short courses (over 160 taught worldwide), certificates and diplomas, a BA (Hons) degree, and a teaching qualification, along with exhibitions and talks. The school operates from its base at Hampton Court Palace in southwest London and extends its teaching across the UK and internationally in North America, Japan, and Australia, with small classes led by experienced RSN tutors. In addition to education, the RSN provides embroidery services from its Hampton Court Palace studio, undertaking bespoke commissions and restoration of historical textiles for clients ranging from fashion designers and cathedrals to private individuals and the Royal Family. The organization counts royalty among its patrons, with Her Majesty The Queen as Patron, and functions as a charity that relies on supporters rather than government funding. In 2024 it launched a free Collection & Archive website to make its heritage more accessible by detailing individual objects, history, materials, and stitches.
