Royal Sundaram General Insurance Co. Limited, formerly known as Royal Sundaram Alliance Insurance Company Limited, became the first private sector general insurance company in India licensed by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India in October 2000. Initially promoted as a joint venture by Sundaram Finance, a respected non-banking financial institution (NBFC), and other Indian shareholders, a significant development occurred in February 2019 when Ageas Insurance International N.V. acquired a 40% equity stake in Royal Sundaram. After necessary regulatory approvals, Sundaram Finance currently holds a 50% stake, Ageas Insurance holds 40%, and the remaining 10% is held by other Indian shareholders.
