Safe Work Australia is a Canberra-based national policy body that guides the development of work health and safety and workers’ compensation policy across Australia. It does not regulate WHS laws; the responsibility for regulation and enforcement lies with the Commonwealth and state and territory governments. The organization aims to raise public awareness of work health and safety, understand factors shaping workplace cultures, and develop mechanisms to drive change, as well as unify WHS laws nationwide and identify opportunities to improve workers’ compensation arrangements.

It serves as a coordinating body for national policy aimed at improving safety outcomes and consistency across jurisdictions. Based in Canberra, ACT, it operates as a mid-sized government agency, engaging with federal and regional authorities. In October 2024, Safe Work Australia announced work on a model Code of Practice to guide fatigue risk management at work.
