The San Diego Spine Foundation (SDSF) was established by Behrooz A. Akbarnia, M.D., in 2004 to support spine-related research and education. The SDSF’s mission statement is to improve the global care of patients with spinal disorders and deformities through research, education, and professional development. Since its inception, the Foundation has proudly funded the San Diego Spine Fellowship Program. Spine research is a significant interest for the SDSF. The Foundation has received and provided grants for numerous adult and pediatric spine research-related studies, many of which have been presented in national and international meetings and have led to multiple publications. The Foundation has also been involved in other educational endeavors, including sponsorship of the regularly held San Diego City Wide Spine Meetings, which offers area physicians and their clinical staff who provide spine care advanced education on current and future trends in the spine field.
