San Francisco Peer Resources works to advance equitable change in schools and communities by engaging and training young people to advocate for their peers. In partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District, it embeds youth development into the school day through teacher-led academic electives at local middle and high schools, with the aim of empowering youth as agents of change. Peer Leaders, the students in these electives, develop skills such as communication, problem-solving, collaboration, and decision-making within a framework focused on transformative change. They identify institutional issues affecting disenfranchised student populations and work to analyze barriers and implement actions to achieve change. Founded in 1979 and based in San Francisco, California, the organization operates as a small team delivering its programs across SFUSD middle- and high-schools; in 2012-2013, 574 Peer Leaders served 13,921 peers.
